Brief History:
Bucca Osgares sunu was born into a time of significant change for the Angles north of the Humber. The year of his birth was Anno Domini 602. Two years later, Æthelfrith of Bernicia conquered Deira and Bucca’s future king, Oswald, was born. Bucca is a Ceoling, descended from Ceol, a legendary warrior who fought his way to wealth and glory.
Bucca’s father Osgar was one of Æthelfrith’s gesiths, who fought, triumphed, and eventually died by his side. When Æthelfrith cyning and his father were killed on the banks of the River Idle, Bucca, his mother Mildburh, and his siblings accompanied the children of Acha and other young noblemen and women into exile. Eadwine was king now and would not hesitate to kill any who threatened his rule.
Æthelfrith’s eldest, Eanfrith, went to the Picts, however Bucca accompanied Oswald to Dál Riata. He never spent much time with the young ætheling, but was converted with the rest of them to the faith of the Irish.
Eventually, when the time came after Eanfrith had been murdered and Bernicia thrown into chaos, Bucca accompanied Oswald’s warband on his quest to reclaim the throne of Bernicia. He proved himself an able companion during the campaign. Cadwallon, the sworn enemy of the Angles, was caught unawares in the Battle of Heavenfield. He was killed, his host destroyed, and Oswald made the unchallenged ruler of Bernicia.
Bucca was rewarded greatly for his loyalty and service. He was given numerous estates throughout Bernicia and was trusted with a great responsibility: guarding Hadrian’s Wall. The Picts had run amok during the chaos of Cadwallon’s tyranny. He was given soldiers, land, and a duty: defend the border.
