The Ceolingas are a clan of Bernician origin. They have loyally served the kings of Bernicia for many generations. Ceolingas have held positions from thane, to high-reeve, to even ealdorman. They are named after their ancestor, Ceol, who was the first of his family to leave the ceorl class and become a thegn to his king for his bravery in battle. During the early days of the Anglian settlement in Britain, many battles were fought with the Celts. Ceol, during one such battle, saved the life of the king. An enemy went forth from the enemy line with a throwing spear in his hand, prepared to throw his missile at the Angle king. Seeing this, Ceol surged forth himself and threw his spear, killing the enemy before he could complete his throw, causing the enemy missile to fall short several yards.
Although there are Ceolingas throughout the Northumbrian Kingdom, on Hadrian's Wall rules Bucca Ceolinga, son of Osgar, a king's thane. He was granted these borderlands and their protection against the barbarian Celts was entrusted to him by King Oswald many years ago for his military service in the campaign to reclaim his throne. Since then, he has become well-established in those lands, though he must keep constantly on guard if he wishes to secure the peace.
